CATF Reports Apr. 26, 2016, 3:49pm

On March 8th, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an organization established in 2010 to end the maritime blockade of the Gaza strip by Israel, has announced a new Gaza flotilla that will set sail in September and is expected to arrive in Gaza on October 1st. Once again, the initiative was sponsored by the Humanitarian Relief Foundation (Insan Hak ve Hürriyetleri Insani Yardim Vakfi, HCC), a major Turkish NGO that is active worldwide and occasionally accused of serving as a front business that supports terrorist activities. It also allegedly acts act as a proxy for the Turkish government in its efforts to increase pressure on Israel.

Turkey has vocally condemned the blockade for years, but the timing of the launch of the new Gaza flotilla is interesting, especially in light of the April 14th statement by Turkey’s presidential adviser Arshad Hormuz who claimed that, following months of quiet negotiations, Israel had agreed to fully lift the blockade of the Gaza strip. Moreover, yesterday Hamas-sponsored Al-Aqsa TV reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had met with Hamas political leader Khaled Meshaal. Entertaining meetings with the politburo of Israel’s arch enemy and sponsoring initiatives that may sabotage months of efforts towards a normalization of the long strained ties between Turkey and Israel seem to contradict Turkey’s commitment to the reconciliation process.
